Proteins

Why a balance is important

Proteins are basic structures found in all living things. An imbalance in proteins is a common feature in many diseases.

What are proteins?

Proteins are large, complex molecules that play many critical roles in the body. They do most of the work in cells and are required for the structure, function, and regulation of the body's tissues and organs.

What goes wrong when there is an imbalance of protein?

An imbalance of proteins is common in most diseases. For example:

  • Hypersecretion of mucus in asthma and Cystic Fibrosis

  • Decrease in secretion of the hormone, insulin, in Diabetes which leads to uncontrolled blood glucose levels.

  • Accumulation of proteins that are not formed properly can cause inflammation.

A balance in the quality control mechanisms in our body are essential to ensure our cells function appropriately.
